Inspection explained: properties can be inspected by national bodies - AA or Visit Britain. These award ratings of between 1 and 5 stars to the same criteria - but the standards required vary between different types of accommodation - principally there are three categories, hotels, guest accommodation and self catering with various subsets within them (e.g. inn, bed and breakfast, country hotel etc.).
An alternative is local inspection which is signficantly cheaper to operators but assesses only to the standards required for a rating of 1 star - some properties will, however, offer quality far in excess of this. These inspections are carried out by Quality Cumbria. All properties advertised by British Tourist Boards are inspected.

If you wish to stay elsewhere in Cumbria you can find and book accommodation online on the websites for Visit Eden and the Cumbria Tourist Board.

How to get here

Appleby is well located for the road and rail networks. You can either use the A66 from Scotch Corner for North East England, Yorkshire and the East Midlands - this road passes Appleby and just follow the signs off it. Driving from Scotland you should reach the M6, joining the A66 at junction 36 (Penrith). People driving from North West England and the West Midlands can use the M6 to junction 38 (Tebay) where the B6260 will take you right into the town centre.

If you are visting the town using sat nav - the postcode for the centre is CA16 6XE.

You can also arrive by rail on the Settle-Carlisle line - Appleby has its own station - or on Virgin Trains to Penrith on the West Coast mainline where bus service 563 will take you to Appleby - these run every 2-3 hours Monday to Saturday 0830 to 2110 (2240 Friday and Saturday) but there is no Sunday service. You can download a timetable from Cumbria County Council.

If you have any other queries please don't hesitate to e-mail us - we will be delighted to help.
